The United States Department of Transportation pointed out that smart phones are involved in 1.6 million auto crashes each year that cause a half million injuries. One out of every four car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving. Texting while driving is 6x more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk.

Just over half of children in the United States — 53% — now own a smartphone by the age of 11 while 84% of teenagers now have their own phone. The totals? More than 7 hours a day for teens, and nearly 5 hours a day for “tweens” ages 8-12.

Heavy users of social media increase their risk of depression by 27%. More than twice as many girls as boys said they had been cyber-bullied in the last year (22% vs. 10%).
